The second week of September 2012 sees the world-famous windmills of Kinderdijk, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, illuminated against the night sky. In the 2nd week of September 2012 the world-famous windmills of Kinderdijk, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, will be lighted at night. The Kinderdijk windmills, dating from 1738-1740, were built to drain the excess water from the Alblasserwaard polders - which are situated below sea-level - and pump the water into the outlets. During the "Mills in Floodlight" week, the windmills are the focal point of the Kinderdijk light spectacle.

Light spectacle
One of the nineteen windmills is illuminated in alternating colours, while the other windmills are in 'floodlight'. This breathtaking light spectacle can be viewed between 21.00h and 23.00h every evening. Kinderdijk is freely accessible and visitors can admire the historic polder windmills on foot or by bicycle. During the "Mills in Floodlight" week, the trail is only accessible to pedestrians in the evening. The visitor's windmill is open 7 days a week from 09.30h to 17.30h, and closed in the evening. |
